Our Beginnings...
Back in the early ’80s, a group of local friends gathered in a garage to "kanikapila." After singing their favorite local Hawaiian songs, they decided to experiment with a different genre—Motown. They quickly discovered that their harmonies were tight and their sound was something special.
Dressed in their best outfits, they began performing for family and friends at small gatherings, sharing their unique blend of Hawaiian style and Motown soul.
Word spread quickly, and soon people were asking to see the “local guys” who sang Motown. Wearing sharp suits and imitating the signature dance moves of their favorite groups, they honed their craft and became Hawaiʻi’s very first Motown tribute group.
As their popularity grew, they knew they needed a memorable name. Since the magic of the “golden oldies” was at the heart of their sound, they chose the name A Touch of Gold. It wasn’t long before they became a local favorite.
As time went by, members of the group changed. New ones would come, and old ones would leave, but the sound would remain the same...GOLDEN!
In 2009...
A Touch of Gold entered the studio to produce their third album, Reborn, which soon earned a nomination for the upcoming Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards. In June of that year, the group proudly took home the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award for Hip-Hop/R&B Album of the Year.
In 2017, A Touch of Gold had the opportunity to sing and film in a Vacations Hawai‘i commercial, bringing their smiling faces and slick harmonies to the city of Las Vegas. The catchy jingle quickly became familiar throughout the islands. That same year, they earned another Nā Hōkū Hanohano nomination—this time for Extended Play (EP) of the Year.
Today, A Touch of Gold continues to perform for the people of Hawai‘i. They take great pride in the fact that every member is born and raised in the islands. They grew up with local traditions and Hawaiian music—but the timeless sound of Motown is also deeply rooted in each of them.
